My friend Leanne evacuated from New Orleans saturday when the voluntary announcement was made. All comunication is lost between anyone with a 504 area code number due to the massive damage. For update information on one community dealing with the effect see [link]
It may be long before many displaced may return to their cities to see the damage.
Pray that the city of New Orleans can repair it's water pumping system and the broken levee to help receeding water leave neighborhoods. Also pray for fair and dry weather as they do not need more moisture added to the mix. Thanks so much.
UPDATE:
From an email from Leanne about New Orleans right now:
"no supplies at this point...they're trying to evac EVERYONE from NOLA. Today FEMA had a convoy of 500 buses to take evacuees from the Superdome to the Astrodome in Houston. I know the Red Cross is asking strictly for money. There will be a need for food and a TON of building materials, but we're looking at AT LEAST a month before even getting back into the city. They're letting people into Jefferson parish on Monday, but only with proof of residency and only to get items from their homes and assess damage and then leave again for at least a month. The way I look at it, we need to just let the government handle the current state of emergency and pool our resources for when the federal gov't starts to back out. I'll ask Topher if there's anything we can do with supplies, but I'm thinking if you want to gather supplies, go ahead and do it with the intention of bringing them down later next year with a work team.
They've turned the airport into a hospital and there will be no incoming flights for the next 2 months (at least). As for service, I honestly don't think we'll be able to start scheduling service trips until November at the earliest...I don't know if the city will be stable enough for us to go back until then. Entergy is saying it will be 2 months before power gets restored. The levee broke, and the city is still filling up with water--there's up to 20 feet of water in a lot of places. Rebecca said her house and her parent's house is submerged...and that's in Metairie (which probably means rick and laura's house is under water too). School's have said the earliest they'll open up again will be December."
